Plant Description
Bear’s Breech, also known as Acanthus mollis, is a fast-growing perennial. In San Francisco Bay Area, the plant is almost evergreen throughout the year. It is a highly ornamental plant featuring large, broad, shiny, dark-green leaves with deep cuts along the edge and tall, erect flower stems that can reach up to about 5’ to 6’ feet tall. It grows in a clump about 3’~4’ tall (not counting the flower stems) and 4'-5’ in diameter. Flower spikes start to appear in mid-March. Blooming begins in late April and lasts through most of the summer. It blooms with impressive white to light pink or purplish flowers on stunningly tall, vertical spikes overlooking its dark-green foliage. Both fresh and dried flower spikes can be used in floral arrangements. With bold textured large leaves and tall, imposing flower stalks, bear's breech makes a fine specimen in a stand-alone cluster of 2 to 3 plants. It stands out in the garden, providing contrast, vigor, and complex texture.

The plants do well in partial shade, preferably in locations where there is sunlight in the morning and shade in the afternoon.
