How Money Tree Plants Started
The Money Tree plant, also known as pachira aquatica, is a very special bonsai plant. Native to the swamps in South America, it is very popular among Fengshui masters and followers as lucky plants because of its five-lobed leaves and the fact that they can thrive both indoors and outdoors. In some rare cases, the plant may also be found to have clusters of seven (7) leaves and is considered EXTREMELY LUCKY. The plant is very popular in Southeast Asian cultures, especially among the Chinese population, because it is said to be able to bring good luck and great fortune to its owner. The plants are often given out as gifts decorated with red ribbons bearing words of blessings in golden color during the Chinese New Year and special occasions such as house-warming parties, celebration of the start of new business, or starting a new job. It’s no surprise that it is often found in homes and businesses.

The practice of braided Money Tree plants was attributed to a Taiwanese truck driver who tried to braid multiple Money Tree plants together to make a Bonsai. The plants are heavily handled (bent and twisted) as they grow. A typical Money Tree plant usually has five plants braided into a central truck; the top of the plant is encouraged to grow outward to provide ample room for the lucky leaves to flourish to create a beautiful canopy.

Plant Care
The plant can grow up to 6 feet in height. It prefers lower light. It does well when its roots are bound (so do not plant it in a container too large for its root ball). Let the top of the soil dry to the touch before watering. Make sure there are drain holes at the bottom of the container. To make the plant look better (shining, healthy, lush, green leaves), apply some light (diluted with water) all-purpose fertilizer every once in a while. You can grow it outdoors if you live in USDA Zones 9-11.
